When & How to Plant White Double Freesia Bulbs
Plant for a Season of Beautiful Blooms and Heavenly Fragrance!
Unlike hardy spring-flowering bulbs, White Double Freesias grow from corms and are best planted according to your climate.
In warmer regions, Freesias are traditionally planted in fall for spring flowers. In cooler climates like Maryland, they can be started indoors or planted outside in spring after the danger of frost has passed.
Spring Planting – For Maryland & Cooler Climates
- When to Plant: Start indoors in late winter or early spring, or plant outdoors after the last frost when soil temperatures are suitable.
- Planting Depth: Approximately 2 inches deep.
- Corm Spacing: 2–3 inches apart.
- Planting Position: Place corms with the pointed end facing upward.
- Sunlight: Full sun to light shade, with protection from intense afternoon heat.
- Soil: Loose, fertile, well-draining soil.
- Watering: Water after planting and keep soil lightly moist during active growth, avoiding soggy conditions.
- Bloom Time: Often approximately 10–12 weeks after planting, depending on temperature and growing conditions.
Important: Freesias prefer cool growing conditions and may struggle to flower during hot summer weather. In Maryland, starting corms indoors in a cool, bright location can help encourage flowering before peak summer heat.
Fall Planting – For Warm Climates (Zones 9–11)
- When to Plant: Fall, typically October through December.
- Planting Depth: Approximately 2 inches deep.
- Corm Spacing: 2–3 inches apart.
- Sunlight: Full sun to light shade.
- Soil: Well-draining soil enriched with organic matter.
- Watering: Provide moderate moisture during active growth and reduce watering as plants enter dormancy.
- Bloom Time: Late winter through spring, depending on climate.
After flowering, allow the foliage to naturally yellow and die back. In colder climates, corms can be lifted and stored in a dry, frost-free location for replanting, although flowering performance may vary.
Our Cottage Garden Tip
Plant a little romance and let the fragrance steal the show!
For an elegant, fragrant display, plant White Double Freesia corms in groups of 10–15 or more in containers or cutting garden beds.
Pair these delicate white beauties with soft pink ranunculus, pastel anemones, lavender, or pale blue spring flowersfor a dreamy cottage garden combination.
They're especially beautiful in an all-white garden, where their graceful stems and sweet fragrance create a romantic atmosphere.
For a gorgeous patio display, plant Freesias in a decorative container near a seating area where you can enjoy their fragrance up close.
Our Favorite Tip for Cut Flowers: Harvest Freesia stems when the first flower or two begins to open. The remaining buds can continue opening in the vase, giving you a beautiful, long-lasting arrangement.
Maryland Gardeners: Freesias are not winter-hardy outdoors in most of Maryland. Treat them as seasonal flowering corms or grow them in containers that can be protected from freezing temperatures. Because Freesias prefer cooler conditions, early indoor starting is often more successful than planting into hot summer soil.
