The Potager

Spring 2023
From Grass to Garden
We made a classic potager the focal point of our back yard. Architectural boxwoods and symmetrical design give this kitchen garden formality and structure while a wild assortment of perennials in the border provide pollinator forage and interest spring through fall. We specialize in this balance of sophistication and casual charm that makes cottage gardens feel so effortless and special.
Cottage Curb Appeal

The First Cottage Garden
When we moved into our 1900 farmhouse, there was nothing but grass. Little did I know that just one season later, my young garden would go viral and be seen by millions! It's what officially launched Figment, and why I made a design plan for all of you to download and recreate at home. It's the first garden you see as you come in the driveway, and an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink plant list. Proof that cottage gardens can have it all.

Dressing Things Up
My client's home was already lovely, but we needed to turn our attention to her vegetable garden.
With fencing, pea gravel, raised beds, pergola with wisteria, perennial borders, and a welcoming entryway and perimeter flower garden, we completely dressed up the space and matched the essence of the rest of her home. Now, it's a functional and beautiful space to grow vegetables and herbs, sip morning coffee, and host company.

A Garden Fit for a Gardener
This gorgeous house is home to an avid gardener who originally just wanted new foundation plantings and to refresh an existing bed. However, I saw the opportunity to accent the beautiful architecture with climbing roses, vertical interest and evergreens, and a sweeping garden to deliver maximum cottage charm—and to balance the proportions of the home.
It's a young garden, but already off to such an incredible start! Next year, there will be foxglove, delphinium, coneflower, phlox, roses, and so much more in a rainbow of colors. You can see progress in the video below.
A Proper Front Garden

Fall 2024
Expanding at Home
The front of our home actually faces the side of our property. Nonetheless, it deserved a grand garden to balance the elevation of our home—and give me a new place to expand!
This garden features a more restrained plant list, centered around a rose garden. Next year, it will really wow. But for now, we're seeing glimpses of peonies, gaura, hyssop, alliums, coneflower, lavender, catmint, and more. Stay tuned for a very exciting reveal next year!
I've also made this garden into a downloadable plan so you can recreate it at home in zones 4-9.
Happy customers speak for themselves.
"Caroline is an absolute dream to work with! She is so knowledgeable about flowers, what would work in a yard under certain conditions and makes the whole process incredibly easy. On planting day, she takes control and executes the vision beautifully. I so appreciate all the love and care she put into making our yard a magical and whimsical garden for our two young daughters."
"I highly recommend Figment Cottage Gardens if you’re looking for a creative, knowledgeable, and supportive garden designer! I had a virtual consultation, and even though I live in a completely different gardening zone (5b), Caroline made sure all of her plant suggestions would thrive in my area. Reviewing the plan, I could tell she carefully considered lighting and placement, which gave me a lot of confidence moving forward. She really listened to what I wanted and tied everything together into a thoughtful, cohesive design."
"Caroline has created a dream garden for us in our backyard. The smells, the blooms, the textures make up a relaxing oasis that we get to enjoy every day. It has been life changing. Caroline listened and helped every step of the way. It’s so much greater than we ever could have imagined."
