When & How to Plant Ranunculus Tecolote® Fire & Ice Corms
Plant for a Spectacular Display of Fiery Orange, Golden Yellow & White Spring Flowers!
For the best results, plant your Ranunculus Tecolote® Fire & Ice corms at the appropriate time for your growing zone.
Ranunculus thrive in cool growing weather, abundant sunshine, and fertile soil with excellent drainage.
Fall Planting – Zones 7–10
In warmer climates, plant Ranunculus corms in fall for a spectacular display of spring flowers. In zone 7, OVERWINTER under frost cloth low tunnels or unheated greenhouse.
- When to Plant: Fall, once temperatures begin to cool.
- Planting Depth: Approximately 1–2 inches deep.
- Corm Spacing: 4–6 inches apart.
- Planting Position: Place the claw-like portions facing downward.
- Sunlight: Full sun, ideally at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Soil: Fertile, loose, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter.
- Watering: Water after planting and provide moderate moisture during active growth, avoiding soggy conditions.
- Bloom Time: Spring.
In suitable warm climates, Ranunculus may survive outdoors and return in future seasons when drainage and winter conditions are favorable.
Spring Planting – Zones 3–7
Live somewhere with cold winters? You can still grow these magnificent Ranunculus!
In colder regions, plant Ranunculus Tecolote® Fire & Ice corms in spring, generally around April in many Zone 5–7 locations, once severe freezing conditions have passed and the soil is workable.
Because Ranunculus prefer cool growing temperatures, earlier spring planting can be beneficial when conditions allow.
- When to Plant: Late winter in suitable climates, depending on local frost conditions.
- Planting Depth: Approximately 1–2 inches deep.
- Corm Spacing: 4–6 inches apart.
- Planting Position: Claw-like portions facing downward.
- Sunlight: Full sun.
- Soil: Fertile, well-draining soil or quality container potting mix.
- Watering: Moderate moisture during active growth; avoid waterlogged soil.
- Bloom Time: Late spring to early summer, depending on planting time and temperatures.
Helpful Growing Tip: Ranunculus can benefit from being soaked in room-temperature water for approximately 3–4 hours before planting to help rehydrate the dry corms. Avoid prolonged soaking, which can encourage rot.
For gardeners who want an earlier start, corms may be presprouted in a cool, frost-free environment before transplanting outdoors.
How to Care for Ranunculus After Flowering
After the flowering season, allow the foliage to naturally yellow and die back before removing it.
In warm climates with suitable growing conditions, Ranunculus may remain in the ground during dormancy if the soil stays well drained.
In Zones 3–7, Ranunculus are not reliably winter-hardy outdoors.
Gardeners who wish to save their corms can lift them after the foliage has died back, allow them to dry thoroughly, and store them in a cool, dry, frost-free location until the next planting season.
Because stored corms do not always survive or rebloom successfully, many gardeners choose to plant fresh Ranunculus each year for the most dependable floral display.
Our Cottage Garden Tip
Create a breathtaking Fire & Ice garden bursting with color!
For an unforgettable spring display, plant all 30 Ranunculus Tecolote® Fire & Ice corms together in a generous grouping, allowing their fiery orange, golden-yellow, and sparkling white blossoms to create a stunning tapestry of color.
Want a more organized look?
Because each color is separately bagged and labeled, you can plant the orange, yellow, and white Ranunculus in individual groups for a beautifully coordinated display.
For a spectacular container garden, fill three decorative planters with one color each and arrange them together on a sunny patio or porch.
The result is a gorgeous, professionally styled spring display!
For a romantic cottage garden combination, pair these colorful Ranunculus with soft peach flowers, creamy white spring blooms, delicate lavender accents, and fresh greenery.
Their luxurious, rose-like blossoms also look beautiful alongside other cool-season flowers.
And don't forget the cutting garden!
The Ranunculus Tecolote® Fire & Ice Collection is a wonderful choice for gardeners who love fresh flowers indoors.
Harvest stems when the buds have developed color and feel slightly soft, before the flowers are fully open, for beautiful vase arrangements.
Combine the three colors for a cheerful spring bouquet, or use the white flowers to soften arrangements featuring bright orange and golden-yellow blooms.
Maryland Gardeners: Ranunculus Tecolote® Fire & Ice is not reliably winter-hardy outdoors in most Maryland gardens.
For the best results, plant corms in spring when the soil is workable and severe freezing weather has passed, or start them in containers in a cool, protected location.
April can be a useful outdoor planting window in many Maryland gardens, but actual timing should be based on local conditions.
Because Maryland summers can become hot and humid, give Ranunculus an early start so they can establish and flower during cooler weather.
Choose a sunny location with excellent drainage, and avoid allowing corms to sit in soggy soil.
Important: Ranunculus plants and tuberous roots contain compounds that can be toxic if ingested and may irritate skin. Keep planting material and flowers away from pets and children.
