When & How to Plant Mixed Hyacinth Bulbs
Plant in Fall for a Spectacular Rainbow of Fragrant Spring Flowers!
For a beautiful display of colorful, sweetly scented blooms, plant your Mixed Hyacinth bulbs in fall, once soil temperatures have cooled and before the ground freezes.
In Maryland and other Zone 6–7 gardens, October through November is generally an excellent planting window.
Planting Instructions
- When to Plant: Fall, typically September through November depending on your growing zone.
- Planting Depth: Approximately 4–6 inches deep, measured from the soil surface to the base of the bulb.
- Bulb Spacing: 4–6 inches apart.
- Planting Position: Place bulbs with the pointed end facing upward.
- Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade.
- Soil: Fertile, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter.
- Watering: Water after planting, then avoid excessive moisture. Provide moderate water during active spring growth if rainfall is insufficient.
- Bloom Time: Early to Mid-Spring.
After flowering, remove spent flower stalks if desired, but allow the foliage to naturally yellow and die back. This helps the bulbs store energy for the following year's blooms.
Hyacinths can return for multiple seasons in suitable conditions, although flower spikes may become smaller or less densely packed over time.
Helpful Planting Tip: Hyacinth bulbs can irritate sensitive skin. Wear gardening gloves when handling and planting them.
Our Cottage Garden Tip
Plant a rainbow of fragrance where everyone can enjoy it!
For an unforgettable spring display, plant Mixed Hyacinth bulbs in generous groups of 10–15 or more, allowing the different colors to mingle naturally for a cheerful cottage garden look.
They're especially beautiful planted along garden walkways, near front entrances, or beside patios, where their rich fragrance can be enjoyed every day.
Pair these colorful Hyacinths with white daffodils, soft pink tulips, blue grape hyacinths, purple violas, or cheerful spring pansies for a romantic spring garden overflowing with color and texture.
For a gorgeous container display, plant several Hyacinth bulbs in a decorative pot with good drainage and surround them with low-growing spring annuals.
Maryland Gardeners: Mixed Hyacinths are well suited to Maryland's cold winters and typically bloom beautifully when planted in fall. Choose a well-drained location, especially in areas with heavy clay soil, to help prevent bulb rot during wet winters.
Important: Hyacinth bulbs and plants are toxic if ingested. Keep them away from pets and children.
