And there's even more to love!
California Wine Festival Bearded Iris is a reblooming variety, offering the potential for another flush of gorgeous flowers later in the growing season when conditions are favorable.
Its primary flowering display typically arrives in spring, with possible rebloom later in summer or fall depending on climate, plant maturity, and growing conditions.
These beautiful flowers also offer a light, pleasant fragrance, making them especially lovely near garden pathways, patios, and outdoor seating areas.
Butterflies and other visiting pollinators may also be attracted to the blossoms, bringing additional life and movement to the garden.
Best of all, California Wine Festival is a wonderfully resilient perennial. Once established, its thick rhizomes help the plant tolerate periods of dry weather, making it a beautiful choice for sunny, drought-tolerant landscapes.
Deer and rabbits also tend to avoid Bearded Iris, making this variety a welcome addition to gardens where browsing wildlife can be a challenge.
Whether you're designing a romantic wine-colored garden, creating a dramatic perennial border, or collecting beautiful reblooming Iris varieties, California Wine Festival Bearded Iris rhizomes deliver exceptional color, graceful fragrance, and timeless cottage garden charm.

When & How to Plant California Wine Festival Bearded Iris Rhizomes
Plant for a Spectacular Display of Rich Burgundy & Purple Flowers!
For an unforgettable show of luxurious wine-colored blooms, plant your California Wine Festival Bearded Iris rhizomes in a sunny location with excellent drainage.
Unlike tulips or daffodils, Bearded Iris grow from thick rhizomes that should be planted close to the soil surface rather than buried deeply.
In Maryland and other Zone 6–7 gardens, late summer through early fall is generally an excellent time to plant or divide Bearded Iris.
Planting Instructions
- When to Plant: Late summer to early fall is preferred, allowing roots to establish before winter. Spring planting is also possible.
- Planting Depth: Position the rhizome horizontally with its upper surface at or just above soil level. In hot climates, a very light covering may be appropriate.
- Rhizome Spacing: Approximately 12–18 inches apart to allow for mature growth and good
- Planting Position: Spread the roots downward into the soil while keeping the rhizome near the surface.
- Sunlight: Full sun is best, ideally at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Light shade may be tolerated.
- Soil: Fertile, well-draining soil. Avoid heavy, waterlogged conditions.
- Watering: Water after planting and periodically during establishment. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods rather than keeping the soil constantly moist.
- Primary Bloom Time: Spring.
- Potential Rebloom: Late summer to fall when conditions are favorable.
After the main flowering period, remove spent flower stalks if desired, but leave healthy foliage in place so the plant can continue storing energy.
Keep the rhizome exposed to sunlight and avoid piling mulch directly over it, which can encourage rot.
Helpful Planting Tip: Bearded Iris perform best when their rhizomes are not crowded. Divide established clumps approximately every 3–5 years, or whenever flowering begins to decline.
Encouraging California Wine Festival Iris to Rebloom
Want another round of those gorgeous wine-colored flowers?
California Wine Festival is valued for its reblooming potential, particularly in Zones 5–10. However, repeat flowering depends on several factors and may vary from year to year.
To encourage rebloom:
- Provide Plenty of Sunshine: Aim for at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Maintain Good Drainage: Avoid consistently wet soil or deeply buried rhizomes.
- Water During Extended Dry Spells: Although established plants tolerate drought, adequate moisture during active growth can help support rebloom.
- Avoid Excess Nitrogen: Too much nitrogen can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
- Allow Plants to Establish: Newly planted rhizomes may need time to mature before producing their strongest flowering displays.
- Divide Crowded Clumps: Give plants room to develop healthy rhizomes and flowering fans.
Rebloom is a wonderful bonus, but it should not be considered guaranteed in every garden or growing season.
Our Cottage Garden Tip
Create a romantic wine-colored garden filled with rich, luxurious blooms!
For a truly breathtaking display, plant California Wine Festival Bearded Iris rhizomes in groups of 3–5 or more, allowing their dramatic burgundy and purple flowers to become the stars of your perennial border.
Pair these magnificent Iris with soft pink Bearded Iris, lavender-purple perennials, creamy white peonies, or blush-colored cottage garden flowers for an elegant and romantic combination.
Their deep wine-colored petals also look especially beautiful alongside silvery-green foliage and soft pastel flowers.
Want a more dramatic look? Combine California Wine Festival with dark purple Iris, burgundy foliage plants, and white flowering perennials to create a sophisticated jewel-toned garden.
For a gorgeous cutting garden, plant California Wine Festival alongside other tall Bearded Iris varieties in shades of peach, pink, lavender, and white.
Its elegant flowers also make beautiful additions to fresh spring bouquets, bringing rich color and a light floral fragrance indoors.
Maryland Gardeners: California Wine Festival Bearded Iris is well suited to many Maryland gardens when planted in a sunny location with excellent drainage.
Because Maryland summers can be hot and humid, provide good air circulation and avoid covering the rhizomes with thick layers of mulch. Proper planting depth and drainage help reduce the risk of rhizome rot.
Although this variety has reblooming potential in Maryland's Zone 6–7 conditions, the timing and reliability of a second flowering period will depend on weather, moisture, plant maturity, and care.
Important: Iris rhizomes and other plant parts can be toxic if ingested and may irritate sensitive skin. Keep planting material away from children and pets.
