Allium Red Giant Star Bulbs – Bold Magenta-Red Ornamental Allium
Brilliant magenta-red blooms, dramatic garden texture, and a whole lot of cottage garden WOW!
If you're looking for an ornamental Allium that breaks away from the traditional purple and blue color palette, Allium 'Red Giant Star' is ready to steal the spotlight!
This extraordinary spring-flowering bulb produces striking, globe-shaped flower heads filled with vibrant magenta-red florets. Each beautiful bloom creates a burst of rich color and fascinating texture, bringing a bold architectural element to cottage garden borders, pollinator gardens, and sunny perennial beds.
Unlike many towering ornamental Alliums, Red Giant Star offers dramatic flowers on a more compact plant, growing approximately 10–14 inches tall. Its sturdy stems hold the colorful flower clusters above attractive foliage, creating an eye-catching display without overwhelming smaller garden spaces.
Blooming in late spring to early summer, Red Giant Star adds an exciting pop of color just as the garden transitions into its summer growing season.
And there's even more to love! These gorgeous ornamental onions are attractive to bees and butterflies, while their onion-family scent makes them generally resistant to browsing deer and rabbits.
Perfect for cottage gardens, pollinator gardens, sunny borders, rock gardens, containers, and fresh-cut arrangements, Allium Red Giant Star brings bold color and easy-care beauty to your landscape.

When & How to Plant Allium Red Giant Star Bulbs
Plant in Fall for a Spectacular Display of Magenta-Red Spring Flowers!
For bold color and striking texture, plant your Allium Red Giant Star bulbs in fall, once soil temperatures have cooled and before the ground freezes.
In Maryland and other Zone 6–7 gardens, October through November is generally a suitable planting window.
Planting Instructions
- When to Plant: Fall, typically October through November in Maryland.
- Planting Depth: Approximately 2–3 times the height of the bulb. For many small to medium ornamental Allium bulbs, this is around 3–5 inches deep.
- Bulb Spacing: Approximately 6–8 inches apart.
- Planting Position: Place bulbs with the pointed end facing upward.
- Sunlight: Full sun, ideally at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Soil: Loose, fertile, well-draining soil. Avoid consistently soggy conditions.
- Watering: Water after planting and provide moderate moisture during active spring growth.
- Bloom Time: Late Spring to Early Summer.
After flowering, allow the foliage to naturally yellow and die back before removing it. This helps the bulbs store energy for future growth.
Leave the spent flower heads standing for additional architectural interest, or cut them for dried floral arrangements.
Helpful Planting Tip: Ornamental Alliums generally perform best in sunny locations with excellent drainage, especially during their summer dormancy.
Our Cottage Garden Tip
Add a little unexpected color to your spring garden!
For a dramatic display, plant Allium Red Giant Star bulbs in groups of 7–15 or more, allowing their vibrant magenta-red flowers to create bold accents throughout your borders.
Pair these gorgeous ornamental onions with soft pink peonies, purple salvia, white spring flowers, or silvery-green foliage plants for a romantic cottage garden combination.
Their unusual flower color is especially beautiful alongside deep purple and lavender tones, while creamy white flowers provide a fresh contrast.
For a charming container display, plant Red Giant Star in a decorative pot with excellent drainage and surround it with lower-growing seasonal flowers.
And don't forget the pollinators! Plant these beautiful Alliums near other nectar-rich flowers to create a welcoming garden for bees and butterflies.
Maryland Gardeners: Red Giant Star is listed as hardy in Zones 5–9, making it potentially suitable for many Maryland gardens. Choose a sunny, well-drained location and avoid areas where bulbs may remain wet during winter.
Important: Allium plants can be toxic to dogs and cats if ingested. Keep bulbs and plants away from pets.
