OTHER: Freesias are an extremely popular flower. They are loved for their bright colors, delightful fragrance, & variety of uses.
Freesia’s large showy trumpet shaped flowers bloom with as many as 10 blossoms per stalk. The Royal Champion Mix includes all of the best colors of the Freesia rainbow! Bees & butterflies will be attracted to their beautiful display. They bloom from spring to summer, with their ideal temperature being a range of 55 - 70F. When grown outdoors, they will be done blooming before the hottest part of the season arrives, & their long, narrow, grass-like leaves will die down after blooming. Freesias are typically planted in groups, & grow very well in containers.
Freesia make an excellent cut flower because of their long vase life of up to 2 weeks! Their fragrance will perfume the air with a delightful combination that is sweet, floral, & fruity like berries & citrus. It has been described often as smelling like candy Interestingly, the scent of the flower varies some between the colors of the blooms, as does the intensity of the fragrance. The Freesia’s scent is very popular worldwide, & is commercially used in countless health & beauty products like perfumes & lotions to home fragrances like air fresheners & candles, & much more.
In the language of flowers, the Freesia symbolizes friendship, thoughtfulness, purity, innocence, & grace under pressure. It’s also the 7th wedding anniversary flower.
Native to South Africa, Freesias are tender perennials (they can’t tolerate frost), but can easily be grown as an annual or houseplant in cooler northern regions. Freesias form corms (similar to a bulb) which can be dug & stored in their dormant state over the winter to replant the next spring. If you choose to plant them in containers, they can be dried & stored overwinter in their containers indoors. Easy as pie! Freesias are also a popular plant for ‘forcing’. Once your seeds form corms, the corms can be ‘forced’ to bloom indoors over the winter in the cold north. Just place them in a sunny window sill - they will only take 10 – 12 weeks to bloom from corms. After the corms have been dormant long enough, simply replant & water them to set them in motion. Say goodbye to those winter blues!
