When & How to Plant Tulip Cairo Bulbs
Plant in Fall for a Spectacular Display of Warm Spring Color!
For a breathtaking show of burnt orange and copper-gold flowers, plant your Cairo Triumph Tulip bulbs in fall, once soil temperatures have cooled and before the ground freezes.
In Maryland and other Zone 6–7 gardens, October through November is generally an excellent planting window.
Planting Instructions
- When to Plant: Fall, typically October through November in Maryland.
- Planting Depth: Approximately 6–8 inches deep, measured from the base of the bulb.
- Bulb Spacing: 4–6 inches apart for a beautiful, full display.
- Planting Position: Place bulbs with the pointed end facing upward.
- Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight preferred.
- Soil: Fertile, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter.
- Watering: Water thoroughly after planting and provide moderate moisture during active spring growth.
- Bloom Time: Mid-Spring.
After flowering, remove spent blossoms if desired, but allow the foliage to naturally yellow and die back before trimming it. This helps the bulbs store energy for future growth.
Helpful Planting Tip: Triumph Tulips are known for their sturdy stems and classic flower shape, making them especially beautiful in both garden beds and cutting gardens.
Although tulips are botanically perennial, many large-flowered hybrid varieties produce their most impressive display in the first spring. For consistently spectacular blooms, many gardeners plant fresh bulbs each fall.
Our Cottage Garden Tip
Create a spring garden that glows like a sunset!
For an unforgettable display, plant Tulip Cairo bulbs in generous groups of 10–15 or more, allowing their warm terracotta and copper tones to create rich splashes of color throughout your garden.
Pair these gorgeous Triumph Tulips with deep purple tulips, burgundy violas, blush pink spring flowers, or creamy white daffodils for a sophisticated cottage garden combination.
For a dramatic, jewel-toned display, combine Cairo with dark purple tulips and blue grape hyacinths. The contrast between warm orange and cool violet creates a beautiful spring color palette.
They're also wonderful in decorative containers, where their rich coloring can complement natural terracotta pots and rustic garden accents.
And don't forget the cutting garden! Cairo's strong stems and elegant blooms make it a lovely addition to fresh spring bouquets.
Maryland Gardeners: Cairo Triumph Tulips are well suited to Maryland's winter temperatures and typically perform beautifully when planted in fall. Choose a sunny location with excellent drainage and avoid areas that remain wet during winter.
Important: Tulip bulbs and plants are toxic if ingested. Keep them away from pets and children.
