When & How to Plant Tulip Atlantis Bulbs
Plant in Fall for a Spectacular Display of Purple & Cream Spring Flowers!
For the most beautiful display of richly colored blossoms, plant your Tulip Atlantis bulbs in fall, once soil temperatures have cooled and before the ground freezes.
In Maryland and other Zone 6–7 gardens, October through November is generally an excellent planting window.
Planting Instructions
- When to Plant: Fall, typically October through November in Maryland.
- Planting Depth: Approximately 6–8 inches deep, measured from the base of the bulb.
- Bulb Spacing: 4–6 inches apart for a beautiful, full display.
- Planting Position: Place bulbs with the pointed end facing upward.
- Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight preferred for strong flowering.
- Soil: Fertile, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter.
- Watering: Water thoroughly after planting and provide moderate moisture during active spring growth.
- Bloom Time: Mid to Late Spring.
After flowering, remove spent blossoms if desired, but allow the foliage to naturally yellow and die back before trimming it. This helps the bulbs store energy for future growth.
Helpful Planting Tip: Tulips perform best in locations with good drainage, particularly during winter. Avoid planting Atlantis in areas where water collects after heavy rain or snowmelt.
Although tulips are botanically perennial, many large-flowered garden Tulips perform best in their first spring. For consistently spectacular displays, gardeners often plant fresh bulbs each fall.
Our Cottage Garden Tip
Create a magical purple spring garden worthy of a fairytale!
For a breathtaking display, plant Tulip Atlantis bulbs in generous groups of 10–15 or more, allowing their magnificent purple-and-cream flowers to create beautiful drifts of color throughout your garden.
Pair Atlantis with creamy white tulips, soft lavender spring flowers, pale pink daffodils, or delicate blue grape hyacinths for a romantic cottage garden combination.
Its richly colored petals and creamy white margins look especially beautiful alongside silvery-green foliage and soft pastel spring blooms.
Want a more dramatic display? Combine Atlantis with deep burgundy Tulips or dark violet spring flowers for a sophisticated jewel-toned garden.
And don't overlook the cutting garden!
These gorgeous purple and cream bicolor Tulips make beautiful additions to fresh spring bouquets. Their striking color combination brings elegant contrast and romantic texture to floral arrangements.
For an enchanting centerpiece, combine Tulip Atlantis with blush pink flowers, creamy white blooms, and fresh greenery.
Container Gardeners: Tulip Atlantis is also a wonderful choice for decorative spring planters. Plant bulbs in groups for a full display while providing adequate space and drainage.
Maryland Gardeners: Tulip Atlantis is well suited to Maryland's winter temperatures when planted in fall. Choose a sunny, well-drained location and avoid areas where bulbs may sit in water during wet winters.
Because Maryland springs can bring periods of heavy rain, excellent drainage is especially important for keeping tulip bulbs healthy.
Important: Tulip bulbs and plants are toxic if ingested. Keep them away from pets and children.
