When & How to Plant Fritillaria Persica Plum Bells Bulbs
Plant in Fall for a Spectacular Spring Statement!
For dramatic towers of rich purple flowers, plant your Fritillaria persica Plum Bells bulbs in fall, once soil temperatures have cooled and before the ground freezes.
In Maryland and other Zone 6–7 gardens, September through November is generally a suitable planting window, with October often an excellent choice.
Planting Instructions:
- When to Plant: Fall, typically September through November depending on your growing zone.
- Planting Depth: Approximately 6–8 inches deep, measured from the base of the bulb.
- Bulb Spacing: 10–12 inches apart.
- Planting Position: Set bulbs with the growing point facing upward. If the top has a noticeable hollow, position the bulb slightly on its side to help prevent water from collecting.
- Sunlight: Full sun to partial sun, ideally with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight.
- Soil: Exceptionally well-draining soil is essential. Raised beds or amended planting areas are ideal for heavy soils.
- Watering: Water after planting and provide moderate moisture during active spring growth. Avoid soggy conditions, especially during dormancy.
- Bloom Time: Spring, typically mid to late spring.
Important Growing Tip: Persian Fritillaria bulbs are particularly sensitive to excessive moisture during dormancy. Choose a location that stays relatively dry during summer to encourage healthy bulbs and reliable flowering. Planting bulbs on their side helps prevent rot!x
After flowering, allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally before removing it. This helps the bulb replenish its energy for future growth.
Our Cottage Garden Tip
Create drama with dark purple!
For an unforgettable spring display, plant Plum Bells Fritillaria in groups of 3–5 bulbs, allowing their tall, elegant flower spikes to rise above lower-growing spring favorites.
Pair these moody beauties with creamy white tulips, pale pink peonies, blue forget-me-nots, or soft yellow daffodils for a romantic cottage garden combination full of contrast and texture.
Their deep purple flowers are especially striking against silver foliage, ornamental grasses, or fresh spring greenery.
Plant them toward the back of your perennial borders or along a garden fence, where their dramatic height and unusual blooms can truly shine.
Maryland Gardeners: If you have heavy clay soil, consider planting Plum Bells in a raised bed or improving drainage with a suitable gritty soil mix. Excellent drainage is one of the most important factors for successfully growing Persian Fritillaria.
Moody Blooms. Towering Beauty. Unforgettable Spring WOW!
