Whimsical patterns, nodding little bells, and a whole lot of spring garden WOW!
Looking for something a little unexpected to add charm and personality to your spring garden? Meet Fritillaria meleagris, the enchanting Checkered Lily, also affectionately known as the Guinea Hen Flower!
This extraordinary spring-flowering bulb produces delicate, nodding, bell-shaped blooms decorated with an intricate checkerboard pattern of deep purple and soft, creamy white. Each flower looks like a tiny work of art, bringing a playful touch of elegance to cottage gardens and woodland-inspired plantings.
Growing just 10–12 inches tall, Checkered Lilies feature slender, silvery-green foliage and graceful stems that weave beautifully among emerging perennials. Their petite size makes them perfect for naturalistic plantings, garden borders, and those charming little spaces between larger spring flowers.
Blooming in mid to late spring, these unusual beauties arrive alongside late daffodils and other spring favorites, adding fascinating texture and color just as the garden begins to fill in.
And here's what makes them even more special: Fritillaria meleagris can naturalize beautifully in suitable growing conditions, gradually forming delightful colonies of patterned spring flowers.

When & How to Plant Checkered Lily Fritillaria Bulbs
Plant in Fall for a Whimsical Spring Display!
For beautiful checkered blooms in spring, plant your Fritillaria meleagris bulbs in fall, when the soil begins to cool and before the ground freezes.
In Maryland and other Zone 6–7 gardens, September through November is generally an excellent planting window, with October being a particularly good time.
Planting Instructions:
- When to Plant: Fall, typically September through November depending on your growing zone.
- Planting Depth: Approximately 3–4 inches deep, measured from the base of the bulb.
- Bulb Spacing: 4–6 inches apart.
- Planting Position: Place bulbs with the pointed end facing upward. If the growing point is difficult to identify, plant the bulb gently on its side.
- Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade.
- Soil: Rich, moisture-retentive but well-draining soil. Unlike many other Fritillaria species, Checkered Lilies appreciate soil that doesn't dry out completely during spring growth.
- Watering: Water thoroughly after planting and maintain consistent moisture during active growth.
- Bloom Time: Mid to Late Spring.
Important Growing Tip: Fritillaria meleagris bulbs can dry out quickly in storage. Plant them promptly after receiving them for the best results.
After flowering, allow the foliage to naturally yellow and die back before removing it. This helps the bulbs store energy for the following growing season.
In favorable conditions, Checkered Lilies may gradually multiply and naturalize, creating increasingly beautiful spring displays.
Our Cottage Garden Tip
Plant in drifts for a meadow full of magic!
For a truly enchanting display, plant Checkered Lily bulbs in generous groups of 15–25 or more, allowing their delicate, patterned blooms to weave naturally through your spring garden.
They're especially beautiful planted alongside white daffodils, primroses, bluebells, ferns, and other woodland-inspired perennials.
For a romantic cottage garden look, tuck them beneath deciduous shrubs or along the edges of garden pathways where their unusual checkerboard flowers can be admired up close.
Maryland Gardeners: Checkered Lilies are particularly well suited to areas with naturally moist spring soil. They're a wonderful choice for partially shaded garden beds, woodland edges, and low-lying areas that retain moisture without remaining waterlogged.
Unlike Persian Fritillaria, which prefers drier summer conditions, Fritillaria meleagris appreciates more consistent soil moisture. Choosing the right planting location will make a big difference in how successfully these beauties return.
