When & How to Plant Fragrant Oriental Lily Bulbs
Plant in Spring or Fall for a Spectacular Summer Show!
Unlike many spring-flowering bulbs, Oriental Lily bulbs can be planted in spring or fall. Both seasons work well, provided the ground is workable and the soil drains properly.
For Maryland and other Zone 6–7 gardens, plant in March through May for summer blooms, or September through November for establishment before winter.
Planting Instructions:
- When to Plant: Spring or fall, while the ground is workable and not frozen.
- Planting Depth: Approximately 4–6 inches deep, measured from the soil surface to the top of the bulb.
- Bulb Spacing: 12–18 inches apart to allow room for mature growth.
- Planting Position: Place bulbs with the pointed or growing end facing upward.
- Sunlight: Choose a location with at least 6 hours of sunlight or bright morning sun with some afternoon shade.
- Soil: Rich, fertile, well-draining soil amended with organic matter.
- Watering: Water thoroughly after planting and keep soil evenly moist, but never waterlogged, during active growth.
- Bloom Time: Late summer, depending on variety and planting conditions.
Because Oriental Lilies grow tall and produce large, heavy blooms, some plants may benefit from staking, especially in windy or exposed garden locations.
After flowering, remove spent blossoms but leave the stems and foliage in place until they naturally yellow and die back. This allows the bulbs to store energy for next year's flowers.
Our Cottage Garden Tip
Plant in clusters for maximum color and fragrance!
For a breathtaking summer display, plant Oriental Lilies in groups of 3–5 bulbs or more, weaving them throughout your perennial borders for dramatic bursts of color and beautiful garden height.
Pair these fragrant beauties with garden phlox, coneflowers, salvia, hydrangeas, or late-blooming perennials for a lush, layered cottage garden overflowing with color.
Plant a few near your patio, garden bench, or outdoor entertaining space, where their heavenly fragrance can drift through the warm summer air.
And don't forget the cutting garden! Oriental Lilies make extraordinary bouquets, bringing a little garden luxury indoors.
One Important Note: Lilies are extremely toxic to cats, including their pollen and vase water. Keep these plants and cut flowers away from cats.
Big Blooms. Beautiful Fragrance. Unforgettable Summer WOW!
