When & How to Plant Double Freesia Bulbs
Plant for a Spectacular Season of Color and Fragrance!
Unlike hardy spring-flowering bulbs, Double Freesias grow from corms and prefer mild, cool growing conditions. Planting time depends on your climate.
In warm regions, plant Freesias in fall for spring flowers. In colder areas like Maryland, start corms indoors or plant outside in spring once the danger of frost has passed.
Spring Planting – Maryland & Cooler Climates
- When to Plant: Start indoors in late winter or early spring, or plant outdoors after the last frost.
- Planting Depth: Approximately 2 inches deep.
- Corm Spacing: 3 inches apart.
- Planting Position: Place corms with the pointed end facing upward.
- Sunlight: Full sun to light shade, ideally with protection from intense afternoon heat.
- Soil: Loose, fertile, well-draining soil.
- Watering: Water after planting and maintain light, even moisture during active growth without allowing soil to become soggy.
- Bloom Time: Often approximately 10–12 weeks after planting under favorable conditions, though flowering depends on temperature and growing conditions.
Important: Freesias prefer cool temperatures and may struggle to flower during hot summer weather. For Maryland gardeners, starting corms indoors in a cool, bright location can improve the chances of flowering before peak summer heat.
Fall Planting – Warm Climates (Zones 9–11)
- When to Plant: Fall, typically October through December.
- Planting Depth: Approximately 2 inches deep.
- Corm Spacing: 3 inches apart.
- Sunlight: Full sun to light shade.
- Soil: Fertile, well-draining soil.
- Watering: Moderate during active growth; reduce watering as plants enter dormancy.
- Bloom Time: Spring, depending on local conditions.
After flowering, allow foliage to naturally yellow and die back. In colder climates, corms can be lifted and stored in a dry, frost-free location for replanting, although flowering performance may vary.
Our Cottage Garden Tip
Plant a rainbow and let the fragrance steal the show!
For a breathtaking display, plant Double Freesia corms in generous groups of 15–25 or more to create a colorful, fragrant garden feature.
They're especially beautiful in decorative containers, where their graceful stems and vibrant blooms can be enjoyed up close.
Pair these cheerful Freesias with pastel ranunculus, delicate anemones, snapdragons, or other spring-flowering favorites for a romantic cottage garden combination overflowing with color.
And don't forget the cutting garden! Harvest Freesia stems when the first flower or two begins to open, allowing the remaining buds to continue opening in the vase.
Maryland Gardeners: Double Freesias are not reliably winter-hardy outdoors in most of Maryland. Grow them as seasonal flowers or in containers that can be protected from freezing temperatures. Early indoor starting is often a better option than planting into hot summer soil.
