When & How to Plant Rock Star Bearded Iris Rhizomes
Plant for a Spectacular Spring Show — and Maybe an Encore!
For healthy growth and beautiful blooms, plant your Rock Star Reblooming Bearded Iris rhizomes in a sunny location with excellent drainage.
In Maryland and other Zone 6–7 gardens, late summer through early fall is an excellent planting time. This allows the rhizomes to establish roots before winter.
Planting Instructions
- When to Plant: Late summer to early fall, typically July through September in Maryland.
- Planting Depth: Plant shallowly, leaving the top of the rhizome at or slightly above the soil surface.
- Plant Spacing: Approximately 12–18 inches apart to allow good air circulation.
- Planting Position: Spread the roots downward and outward beneath the rhizome.
- Sunlight: Full sun is best, ideally at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Soil: Loose, well-draining soil. Avoid heavy, consistently wet conditions.
- Watering: Water after planting and provide moderate moisture while roots establish. Reduce watering once plants are established.
- Bloom Time: Main flowering season is typically late spring to early summer, with possible rebloom later in the growing season.
Important Planting Tip: Bearded Iris rhizomes should never be buried deeply. Planting too deep can reduce flowering and increase the risk of rot.
For the best flowering performance, avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer and keep mulch away from the exposed rhizomes.
Encouraging Rock Star to Rebloom
Because Rock Star is a reblooming variety, a little extra care can help encourage its second performance.
- Provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight.
- Water during extended dry spells, especially when plants are preparing to rebloom.
- Remove spent flower stalks after the first flowering season.
- Feed lightly with a low-nitrogen fertilizer if needed.
- Divide crowded clumps approximately every 3–5 years to maintain vigor.
Please Note: Reblooming is not guaranteed every year. Temperature, rainfall, sunlight, plant maturity, and local growing conditions all influence whether a second flush develops.
Our Cottage Garden Tip
Give Rock Star center stage in your garden!
For a truly spectacular display, plant California Rock Star Reblooming Bearded Iris in groups of 3–5 rhizomes or larger drifts, allowing enough space for each plant to develop into a beautiful flowering clump.
Its dramatic maroon rose and cream blooms look especially gorgeous paired with soft pink peonies, purple salvia, white Shasta daisies, lavender, and silvery foliage plants.
Plant California Rock Star toward the middle or back of a sunny cottage garden border, where its tall flower stalks can rise above lower-growing perennials.
For a beautiful cutting garden, combine Rock Star with other Bearded Iris varieties in complementary shades of burgundy, blush pink, and creamy white.
Maryland Gardeners: Rock Star is well suited to Maryland's winter temperatures, but good drainage is essential during our humid summers and wet winters. Plant rhizomes shallowly so they're exposed to the sun, avoid heavy mulch over the crown, and provide good air circulation to help prevent rot.
For the best chance of reblooming, give plants consistent moisture during dry periods without allowing the soil to remain soggy.
