When & How to Plant Blumex Parrot Tulip Bulbs
Plant in Fall for a Spectacular Spring Show!
For a garden bursting with dramatic color, plant your Blumex Parrot Tulip bulbs in fall, once the soil has cooled and before the ground freezes. In Maryland and other Zone 6–7 gardens, October through November is generally an ideal planting window. In colder zones (6 and under), you may plant through December.
Planting Instructions:
- When to Plant: Fall, typically September through November depending on your growing zone.
- Planting Depth: 6–8 inches deep, measured from the soil surface to the base of the bulb.
- Bulb Spacing: 4–5 inches apart.
- Planting Position: Place bulbs with the pointed end facing upward.
- Sunlight: Choose a location with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Soil: Fertile, well-draining soil; avoid areas that remain soggy.
- Watering: Water thoroughly after planting. Provide moderate moisture during active spring growth.
- Bloom Time: Mid-Spring.
After flowering, remove spent blooms and allow the foliage to naturally yellow and die back. This helps the bulbs store energy for future growth. Like many specialty tulips, Parrot Tulips often perform best in their first spring and may not return with the same vigor in subsequent years.

Our Cottage Garden Tip
Go big with Blumex! Plant these extraordinary Parrot Tulips in clumps of 10–15 bulbs per 1-2 sq feet for a breathtaking burst of color. Their oversized, ruffled blooms create spectacular focal points when tucked between emerging perennials or planted along garden pathways. We love them in pots for bang for your buck and a magazine worthy display.
For an especially dramatic cottage garden combination, pair Blumex with deep purple tulips, creamy white daffodils, or delicate blue forget-me-nots. The contrast makes their fiery colors absolutely unforgettable!
Because Parrot Tulips have large, elaborate blooms, choose a location protected from strong winds and heavy spring storms to keep their flowers looking their best.
Plant in Fall. Prepare for Spring. Let Blumex Steal the Show!
